  • Abstract:This study explored the spatial and temporal distribution characteristics of the magnetic properties of suspended particles in the estuary and their relationship with heavy metal pollution based on the results of magnetic measurement at 16 stations in the flood season in 2017 and 8 stations in the dry season of 2016 from the Pearl River Estuary, the synchronous hydrological survey and heavy metal measurement of suspended particles. The results show that the average susceptibility χ value of the suspended particles is 61.1×10-8 m3·kg-1, and ferromagnetic minerals are the main contributors to the magnetic susceptibility. In general, the χ value in the distal estuary section is greater than that of the estuary section, and χ values in the dry season are higher than those in the flood season. The magnetic particles include multi domain, single domain and superparamagnetic properties. Quasi-single domain and multi-domain particles are dominant in the flood season, while single and quasi-single domain particles dominate in dry season. The spatial and temporal distribution of magnetic properties of suspended particles is mainly affected by natural factors such as the nature of parent rock, the discharge of river water, and human activities such as heavy metal pollution. The correlation coefficient between the content of heavy metal elements and magnetic parameters is mostly between 0.4~0.7, and the correlation with χ, SIRM,χARM, S-100, S-300 and SOFT is greater than 0.5, which can be used to indicate different heavy metal pollution degree of suspended particles in the Pearl River Estuary.
