- Abstract:This paper investigated the accumulation characteristics of total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) in fish exposed to mercury (Hg) in the absence or presence of norfloxacin or oxytetracycline, in an attempt to illustrate these two antibiotics accumulation on the methylation of mercury (Hg) in vivo of fish. The results showed that THg contents in fish muscle increased at the early stage and then gradually decreased with time when the fish were exposed to single Hg; however, THg in head and visceral mass increased continuously. It was noted that, THg in visceral mass was significantly higher than that in head (p<0.01). On the other hand, it was observed that the accumulation of MeHg in different fish tissues rose gradually during the culture period, especially in muscle and visceral mass (p<0.05). However, no significance difference was observed in fish head (p>0.05). When the fish were exposed to Hg and one of these two antibiotics simultaneously, both THg and MeHg content in fish varied significantly in comparison with sole exposure to Hg. Both norfloxacin and oxytetracycline could promote the accumulation of THg, and but inhibit MeHg formation in fish tissues (p<0.01). Norfloxacin exhibited stronger effects than oxytetracycline on the promotion of THg accumulation and the inhibition of MeHg formation.
