- Abstract:This paper presents the first comprehensive survey of 18 polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in surface soil samples collected from Gaolan county, a semi-arid region in Northwest China, in which the target PCBs were analyzed using GC-MS. The sources and pollution characteristics were identified and the health risks of local population exposure to PCBs were estimated based on principal component analysis, multiple linear regression analysis as well as human health risk model. The concentration of ∑18PCBs ranged from 3.675 ng·g-1 to 19.146 ng·g-1, higher average concentration was observed in the soil adjacent to downtown and industrial areas, and tetra-PCBs and penta-PCBs were the most dominant congeners in all soil samples. Moreover, the result of source apportionment suggested that the abundant ∑18PCBs concentrations in soil were originated from the sources of combustion and industrial thermal process, while other significant sources including PCB-containing electrical equipment and combustion process sources contributing soil PCBs concentrations were also identified in the study area. The carcinogenic risk of local residents exposure to PCBs was estimated at the lower level, and the non-carcinogenic risk for all age groups of population were much lower than the acceptable limit. Given combustion and industrial thermal processes were recognized as major PCBs sources for local soil, adverse effects on residents’ health attributable to PCBs emission should be seriously considered.
